So I drove my pickup today to get it filled with cheap gas. However, it now is shaking itself to death between 30 and 50MPH, but only when force is being applied to the drivetrain (i.e. not freewheeling. It doesn't shake when rolling in Neutral, or giving it gas in Neutral [makes me feel better that it isn't the engine]). What does Oppo think is happening?
I suspect that the rear diff (Ford 8.8 Traction-Lok) is having issues, especially considering the new weird smell that I noticed after getting back to the house after driving home from the office.

if you said it only going it under load, then i suspect it would either be the trans, or the diff.
pray its the diff

It sounds like converter or O/D shudder. It's common in these trucks.
My 95 F150 has the same issue. Changing all of the trans fluid should fix it. That includes the torque converter. The converter has it's own drain plug.
Lucas and others have "band-aid" additives that help too.

old burned diff fluid is one of the worst smelling things, according to my shop. I haven't experienced it myself, but 9 year old, 150k mile ATF is enough to keep me well away.
Is the shaking in the seat mostly, or does it feel distant?
I'd poke your head down and make sure the driveshaft looks clean and not scuffed up anywhere.

my Volvo '98 V70 AWD exhibited similar issues, thought it was the notorious angle-drive or the viscous-couple failing... full trans fluid flush and it was shifting and driving better than ever before.
Could be the diff. though...

U-joint bushings wearing out?
Nice truck!

Even unburned diff fluid is also very rank.

It feels more distant. I can't rule out A/T issues, but knowing I already had gear whine in the rear differential, I'm more wanting to point the finger at that.
I don't drive the truck every day, but it will be time to roll under it with the creeper, along with taking it to my Ford axle guy.

Mine is a SuperCab. I didn't have a picture of my exact truck, but I think it's floating around Oppo somewhere.
With the u-joints, wouldn't they continue to vibrate under movement?

Generally below 30 it is the rear U joint. Above that the front U joint. Replace both.

We had TC shudder in a '90 Club Wagon (E350 HD with E4OD), which then was followed by the trans getting trashed (friend driving it). I know a little of the backstory of KusabiSensei's truck, though - it's had a little bit of whine from the rear for a while, so the diff is somewhat suspect, particularly with the smell of gear oil.

Personally I have no idea! I have an old pickup that shakes quite a bit at highway speeds... But I smell no diff fluid and it shifts fine... I was throwing something out there, because my other guess was that your tranny is going bad.

If it's more distant, I would say it's coming from the rear. Kind of like how you tell front/rear balance issues based on whether the wheel is shaking or the seat is shaking in a regular car.
30-50mph is a bit specific, maybe see if it's happening in a specific gear? I don't know much about trucks, but I've had my share of transmission problems and they're no joke. My only reserve about the rear is that you should hear/feel a problem regardless of whether the trans is in neutral or not.

It happens in 2-4 on the transmission, and isn't specific to gear, and knowing that there may be excessive play in the differential (or just fluid needing to be changed), makes me apt to point the finger at the differential.
I may also fix it up and use it as a trade in to get something slightly newer, mainly because towing an Audi all over the place probably isn't what was in mind when the duty cycle of the half-ton was imagined at Ford Engineering HQ.
